Most Lake Norman visitors come for the lake — but the smartest ones discover Davidson. This walkable college town sits just 10 minutes from our properties and packs more charm, culture, and excellent food per square block than anywhere else in the region. It's the kind of place where you plan to stop for coffee and end up staying all afternoon.
☕ Start with Coffee
Begin at Summit Coffee Co. on Main Street — the birthplace of one of the Southeast's most respected coffee roasters. Their Davidson location is the original, and it shows: local art on the walls, students studying in corners, and a palpable energy that makes you want to sit down and stay a while. The espresso drinks are excellent and the pastry case is dangerous.
Grab your coffee to-go and walk. Davidson's entire downtown is walkable in about 15 minutes, but you'll want to take your time.
🎨 Galleries & Shopping
Davidson has a surprisingly rich art scene anchored by the Davidson College campus, whose galleries are open to the public. But the downtown galleries are the real draw:
- ✦ The Soda Shop — a Davidson institution with vintage charm, milkshakes, and community vibes
- ✦ Main Street Books — an indie bookstore that's been a Davidson anchor for decades
- ✦ Local boutiques — clothing, home goods, and gifts from local makers
- ✦ First Friday Gallery Walks — monthly art walks with open galleries, live music, and wine (spring through fall)
💡 Tip
First Friday Gallery Walks run April through October. Plan your Lake Norman trip to include a Friday evening in Davidson — the whole town comes alive.
🍽️ Lunch & Dinner
Kindred — The Main Event
Let's be honest: for many visitors, Kindred is the reason to come to Davidson. Chef Joe Kindred transformed a 1914 Methodist church into one of the most acclaimed restaurants in the Charlotte region. The menu changes with the seasons, but the legendary milk bread with salted honey butter is always there — and it's every bit as good as you've heard.
Kindred is a destination restaurant, not a casual drop-in. Make reservations at least 2 weeks ahead for dinner, especially on weekends. Lunch is slightly easier to get into and the menu is just as impressive.
Can't Get a Reservation?
If Kindred is fully booked, try their sister concept — Kindred's milk bread is also available at their adjacent bar and lounge, which takes walk-ins.
More Davidson Dining
- ✦ Flat Iron Kitchen & Taphouse — elevated pub fare, wood-fired pizzas, and an excellent tap wall
- ✦ Toast Café — breakfast and brunch spot with creative egg dishes and strong coffee
- ✦ The Soda Shop — classic burgers, milkshakes, and a nostalgic atmosphere
🏫 Davidson College Campus
Even if you have no connection to the school, the Davidson College campus is worth a stroll. Founded in 1837, the campus features beautiful Georgian architecture, mature oak trees, and a sense of history you can feel. The college's art galleries host rotating exhibitions that are free and open to the public. On game days, the campus buzzes with energy.
Fun fact: Steph Curry played basketball at Davidson College. The small gym where he had his breakout NCAA tournament run is still there — and yes, basketball fans do make pilgrimages.
🌳 Outdoor Davidson
If you want to stretch your legs, the Fisher Farm Park offers 100+ acres of walking and mountain biking trails just outside town. For a gentler walk, the greenway system connects Davidson's neighborhoods with paved paths perfect for jogging or a family walk.

"We planned to stop in Davidson for an hour. We ended up staying until dinner at Kindred. It's one of those towns you just fall in love with."
